Community College Civic Summit

The Democracy Commitment at Delta College is pleased to offer faculty and students across Michigan the opportunity to gain tools to facilitate political conversations in the classroom, as well as gain ideas for inspiring civic awareness in the classroom and on campus. These topics and more will be part of the Community College Civic Summit featuring Verdis Robinson, national director for The Democracy Commitment, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, March 24, on the campus of Delta College.

This event is free to participants and made available through Delta’s 5-year membership in The Democracy Commitment, a national organization of community colleges dedicated to preparing students for active citizenship. 

The agenda for the March 24 event is as follows:

  • 10 – 10:45am: Characteristics of a Civically Engaged Campus with Verdis Robinson
  • 11am – 12pm:
    • Breakout #1: Facilitating political discussions in your classroom with Verdis Robinson
    • Breakout #2: Student dialogue on how to inspire civic awareness and engagement on your campus, led by Citizens In Action student club at Delta College
  • 12 – 12:30pm: Lunch (On your own at the Red Brix Café)
  • 12:45 – 1:45pm:
    • Breakout #1: Dialogue on how to inspire civic awareness and engagement on your campus, led by The Democracy Commitment Team at Delta College
    • Breakout #2: The Civic Spectrum: A holistic approach to civic engagement with Verdis Robinson
  • 1:45 – 2pm: The Democracy Commitment as a platform for civic education and democratic engagement
